California man Leon Rosby was arrested on June 30 for interfering with police in the course of an investigation after he pulled up to the scene of a police standoff and filmed the officers while loud music blared from his car, the Los Angeles Times reports.
When officers handcuffed Rosby his dog jumped out of the open window of his car and lunged at a police officer who shot it four times.
The incident was captured on video and the police department was bombarded with hate mail, came under cyber-attack and death threats were made against the officers involved.
However, a new video has emerged which shows officers repeatedly telling Rosby to leave the scene and trying to restrain the dog before fatally shooting it.
The new footage shows an officer offer his hand to the Rottweiler to sniff before shooting it when it jumps

July 05, 2013: Footage of police in the US shooting dead a dog has gone viral, leading to the officers involved receiving death threats. The Southern California Police Department’s public information officer Lt. Scott Swain said the video “will help us tremendously regarding [Rosby’s] actions prior to his arrest”.
” You can see the officer gives out his hand to let the dog sniff it and tries to grab the leash,” he said.
Los Angeles-based defence attorney Robert Helfend has questioned the officers’ actions.
“Once the officers made the decision to detain Mr Rosby, they seemed to have no plan in place regarding the handling of his dog. It would seem, in hindsight, that the officers could have simply let Mr Rosby go temporarily, to contain his animal,” he said.
The investigation continues.
