During Wednesday’s Capitol Hill testimony by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton regarding the deadly September 11, 2012, attack on an American consulate in Libya, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) grilled her about her knowledge of the security situation in Benghazi prior to the attack. Clinton acknowledged that she had held discussions about the security situation in Libya prior to the attack, but that these discussions did not relate to specific threats.

“Were you ever asked to participate in any sort of internal or interagency meeting before this attack with regards to the deteriorating security situation in Libya,” Rubio asked.

“With specific security requests, they didn’t come to me — I had no knowledge of them,” Clinton replied. “With regard to the situation in Libya — not just Eastern Libya, across Libya — there were a number of conversations and meetings to try to see what we could do while Libya went through this transition from transitional government, to interim government, to elections to try to get in there and help them with security.”

Clinton said the State Department sent both military and civilian teams to Libya prior to the attack to advise and consult on security

Rubio then asked if diplomatic security for various American missions came up in any of the security-related meetings. Clinton replied that she did not receive specific information about threats to American facilities, and defended the decision to use local militias to provide security. “Other militias in Tripoli had proven to be responsive,” Clinton said.
